University Archivist - Texas A&M University

Location: USA - TX - College Station

Texas A&M University Libraries seeks a creative and dynamic professional to join the Texas A&M University Libraries as the University Archivist. We are hiring one individual for a full-time position with an 11-month academic appointment. This is an open-track faculty search allowing applicants to indicate a preference for either a tenure-track/tenured position with research and service expectations or a non-tenure track position with professional service expectations. Applicants will be considered for the faculty titles of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor or Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, Clinical Professor depending on qualifications.

Reporting to the Dean of the University Libraries through the Associate Dean / Director of Cushing Memorial Library and Archives, the University Archivist is responsible for developing, promoting, and activating the University Archives and providing oversight to the Records Management program. The University Archivist is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the archives and for coordinating the identification, appraisal, acquisition, processing, storage, access, preservation, and disposal of University Archives materials. The University Archivist builds the University Archives collections, including collections representing historically marginalized campus communities, in all formats, while observing the best practices for collection development through primarily donations and departmental transfers, and develops and maintains the University Archives in alignment with the mission of Cushing Memorial Library and Archives, the University Libraries and Texas A&M University.

The University Archivist serves as the primary spokesperson for Texas A&M history on behalf of the Libraries. The University Archivist promotes engagement with the campus and community through programing outreach, public programing, and instructional activities. The University Archivist also serves as a resource for students, faculty, staff, former students, researchers, scholars, and the community.

Required Qualifications:
  • A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (or equivalent) from an American Library Association-accredited institution or program recognized by the American Library Association as an international equivalent. A terminal degree in an appropriate area or an advanced degree in an appropriate area with an archival certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists will be considered as an exception to the requirement for an ALA accredited master’s degree.
  • A minimum of five years professional experience as an archivist processing and cataloging archival or manuscript collections; including at least one year of professional experience providing research, reference and instruction support in an academic or research environment and successfully managing and supervising the daily activities of a unit or department.
  • Experience with donor relations and developing community contacts.
  • Demonstrated curatorial experience and knowledge of current archival methods, theories, practices, and proper handling of physical archival collections materials and including preservation of mixed collections.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with archival collection management systems (e.g., AtoM, ArchivesSpace, etc.), including archival content, structure, and preservation metadata standards such as EAD and DACS and in applying current descriptive and metadata standards Excellent organizational, time and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and in cooperation with faculty, staff, students, former students, and researchers from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds regardless of age, gender, marital status, religion, sexual orientation, or disabilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A second master’s degree.
  • Experience with relevant library information technology applications (e.g., OCLC WorldCat, Voyager, Alma, and MARC).
  • Knowledge of digital archives, digital initiatives or institutional repositories, best practices and real-world applications, trends, and emerging technologies.
  • Experience with curating exhibits including online (e.g., creation, design, installation, and producing exhibition catalogs).
  • Experience with best practices and standards issued by SAA, ALA, and RBMS and other relevant professional organizations.
  • Knowledge of Texas and Texas A&M University history.
