Serials Cataloging Librarian - Texas A&M University
Location: USA - TX - College StationTexas A&M University Libraries seeks a creative and dynamic professional to join the Texas A&M University Libraries as Serials Cataloging/Metadata Librarian. We are hiring one individual for a full-time position with an 11-month academic appointment beginning Spring 2020. This is an open-track faculty search allowing applicants to indicate a preference for either a tenure-track/tenured position with research and service expectations or a non-tenure track position with professional service expectations. Depending on qualifications, applicants for tenure-track/tenured positions will be considered for the faculty titles of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor. Similarly, applicants for non-tenure track positions will be considered for the faculty titles of Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, or Clinical Professor.
Reporting through the Director of Metadata and Cataloging, the Serials Cataloging/Metadata Librarian is responsible for performing original and complex copy cataloging (including bibliographic description, subject analysis, classification, and authority control) for serials in all formats, in accordance with established local and national policies, procedures, and standards. Duties include cataloging databases and websites, catalog maintenance projects, and participation on teams preparing designated collections for remote storage facilities. The Librarian may contribute and modify name, subject and series authority records through the NACO and SACO branches of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging. The successful candidate will collaborate with the cataloging team to develop policies and procedures in accordance with national standards and best practices. They will also participate in the migration to and implementation of FOLIO open source library services platform.
The successful candidate will participate in the planning and implementation of non-MARC metadata and workflows for various digital collections in the Libraries’ local repository and in external shared repositories. They will maintain updated current knowledge of national trends and developments in cataloging and metadata standards, understanding how they impact integrated library systems and the ability of users to discover and access content. As assigned, the successful candidate will advise and assist staff in resolving copy cataloging and item maintenance problems, review records, and provide training in serials and metadata topics.
The person in this position must be a self-starter, detail-oriented, and enjoy solving problems in a collaborative, collegial environment with continually evolving technologies.
- Master’s degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited program (or international equivalent)
- Knowledge of cataloging standards and practices, including RDA, Library of Congress subject headings and classification schedules, CONSER guidelines, authority control, and linked data
- Aptitude for complex, analytical work with attention to detail and problem solving skills, including the ability to identify, analyze, and evaluate problems and devise solutions
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as an individual as well as collaboratively and collegially in a team environment
- Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively and balance multiple responsibilities
- Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively work with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
- Demonstrated flexibility to accommodate changing priorities, needs, and deadlines
- Strong customer service orientation
- Experience performing original and/or copy cataloging monographs, preferably in an academic or research library
- Experience performing original and/or copy cataloging serials, preferably in an academic or research library
- Experience contributing bibliographic records to PCC CONSER program
- Experience contributing authority records to PCC NACO program
- Knowledge of one or more non-MARC metadata standards
- Knowledge of one or more digital repository systems such as DSpace, OJS, Fedora, etc.
- Familiarity with data migrations between standards and platforms
- Working cataloging knowledge of one or more languages other than English
- Experience coordinating a team or committee
- Experience planning and implementing projects
- Ability to think creatively and innovatively
Salary/Benefits: Faculty rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience; minimum starting salary will be $50,500. Excellent benefits include health plan and paid life insurance; several retirement plans including TIAA; paid holidays; no state or local income tax.
