University Archivist - Texas A&M University

Location: USA - TX - College Station

Texas A&M University Libraries seeks a creative and dynamic professional to join the Texas A&M University Libraries as University Archivist. We are hiring one individual for a full-time position with an 11-month academic appointment beginning Summer 2020. This is an open-track faculty search allowing applicants to indicate a preference for either a tenure-track/tenured position with research and service expectations or a non-tenure track position with professional service expectations. Applicants will be considered for the faculty titles of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor or Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, Clinical Professor depending on qualifications.

Reporting to the Dean through the Associate Dean for Special Collections and Director of Cushing Memorial Library and Archives, the University Archivist is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the University Archives and will be the primary spokesperson for Texas A&M history on behalf of the Libraries. Responsibilities include coordinating the identification, appraisal, acquisition, storage, access, preservation and disposal of university archives in both Unpaper and electronic formats, including supervision of the University Records Manager and conducting archival review of university and departmental records, as required; organizing collections; creating archival based descriptions; providing online and in-house reference services. Additional responsibilities include onsite visits to investigate, assess, and acquire potential collections; donor engagement; conducting outreach programs to the campus community and participating in instructional sessions; collaborating in exhibit design and fabrication; participating in digitization initiatives; and curator engagement on the Clements Papers collections.

Tenure-track responsibilities include engaging in research activities leading to publications and national service to meet both the Libraries’ and the University’s requirements for tenure and promotion. Non-tenure track responsibilities include engaging in professional service at multiple levels with demonstrated national impact.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution (or international equivalent)
  • At least 3 years of archival-related experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service
  • Experience working successfully with persons from culturally diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and teamwork skills complemented by the ability to take initiative


Desired Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in history or related field with emphasis on archival work
  • Experience working in an academic setting
  • Experience with digitization initiatives or institutional repositories
  • Experience in the creation of exhibits or exhibit fabrication
  • Knowledge of Texas and/or Texas A&M University history and traditions
  • Familiarity with DACS, EAD, and major archival software and tools (e.g., AtoM, Archon, ArchivesSpace, etc)
  • Evidence of successful project management


Salary/Benefits: Faculty rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience; minimum starting salary will be $54,500. Excellent benefits include health plan and paid life insurance; several retirement plans including TIAA; paid holidays; no state or local income tax. Funding is provided for professional travel and development activities.
