Assistant Professor (Research & Learning Services Librarian for Medicine)

The Medical and Health Sciences Library at Belmont University is seeking applications for a non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning Spring, 2023.

Come join our team to develop the new Medical and Health Sciences Library! Located in the heart of Nashville, Belmont has a long history of excellent health science education with existing programs in exercise science, nursing, public health, occupational therapy, physical therapy, pharmacy, and social work. A new medical school is currently being developed, with the first class expected in fall, 2024. The Frist College of Medicine will focus on a whole-person approach to health care with deep and nuanced understanding of one’s physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs and the socioeconomic and systems factors that affect health care. The educational emphasis will be on active and self-directed learning and on interprofessional simulation and collaboration. The leadership team has expressed a strong desire to collaborate with library faculty on curriculum development and to integrate librarians throughout the curriculum as part of the teaching team. This is an excellent opportunity to join the foundational team and have an active role in not only curriculum development but in all aspects of the new library.

Flexible Work Arrangements available, including remote work up to three days per week, compressed schedule, or flexible schedule. Must live within driving distance of Belmont University's Nashville campus.

Job Functions

• Initiate and build strong relationships with primary liaison area, the Frist College of Medicine (FCoM) faculty, staff, and students

• Work in collaboration with the FCoM faculty and staff to integrate information literacy and evidence based medicine instruction throughout the curriculum.

• Provide research or instructional support to other health-related disciplines on campus on topics of interprofessional interest in order to support the broader mission of the Medical and Health Sciences Library

• Provide reference assistance, in-depth research consultations, and literature searches to support student and faculty scholarship

• Contribute to the development of the library website including LibGuides and LibAnswers

• Engage in activities to support the mission and vision of Belmont University and the Frist College of Medicine

• College and university service

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Knowledge of instructional design and assessment.
  • Knowledge of evidence based medicine principles.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies in medical libraries.
  • Knowledge of resources and collections to support medical education.
  • Excellent facilitation, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach information literacy or evidence based medicine.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct in-depth searches of the medical literature using PubMed and other health science databases.
  • Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong user-focused public services orientation.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in teams and in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Ability to successfully interact with students, other educators and educational institution representatives, and the general public in a professional manner.
  • Ability to take initiative and remain flexible in a new and developing medical library.
  • Ability to develop and manage complex projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Required Education: ALA-accredited Master’s degree

Preferred Experience

• 2 years related experience, preferably in an academic medical or health sciences library

• Teaching experience, preferably teaching evidence based medicine
