Reference & Instruction Librarian for Theology - Loyola Marymount University

The Reference & Instruction Librarian for Theology will provide high-quality reference, instruction, collection development, and outreach services to the LMU Community, with a particular emphasis on LMU’s Theological Studies and related programs. The successful candidate must have a degree, background, or interest in Theology or a related field and be willing to continue upgrading their knowledge, skills, and abilities. This librarian serves as the lead provider of information literacy instruction and web-based research material in support of undergraduate and graduate students in Theological Studies and related programs. Additionally, this librarian works on the Information Desk, participates in virtual reference, and assists with Reference Department projects, assessment, and decision-making. The Reference and Instruction Librarian for Theology reports to the Head of Reference and Instructional Services.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited graduate program or related field.
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree, certificate, background, or demonstrated interest in Theological Studies or a related field.
  • Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral). Good attentive listening skills are essential as well as a strong user-service orientation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of basic reference sources and reference practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the area of library instruction and information literacy.
  • Proficient in Mac and Windows operating systems and commonly used productivity software such as Microsoft Office and Adobe products.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and harmoniously in a team environment, including faculty and students who are very diverse in their religious and cultural belief systems.
  • Minimum of one-year professional level experience (including internships) working in an academic library.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience providing theology- or religion-related reference and instruction services in an academic library setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with religious and theological studies information resources, including tools such as ATLA Religion Database, Proquest Religion Database, the Vatican Web site, and PhilPapers.
  • Knowledge in the area of building, managing, and assessing collections in theology and religious studies areas with an ecumenical or multi-faith range.
  • At least passing knowledge of one or more of the key languages associated with theological studies in our setting (Latin, Greek, Spanish, French, German or Italian).
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies critical to the design and delivery of reference and information services.
