Outreach and Engagement Librarian

The Pennsylvania State University Libraries invite applications and nominations for an Outreach and Engagement Librarian at the Penn State Abington campus. We seek a proactive and creative individual to engage and collaborate with students, faculty, and staff around teaching and learning. The successful candidate will work across campus on initiatives that contribute to student success, creating an inclusive community, and fostering co-curricular user engagement. This includes developing strategies for engaging underrepresented and/or minoritized communities and international students. The candidate will champion library programming and instruction that features a broad array of perspectives and approaches, culturally diverse resources, inclusion and accessibility, and forward-thinking approaches to the delivery of library services.

Major responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating outreach and engagement programs in collaborative partnership with a wide range of stakeholders, such as academic and student support offices on campus, collaborating with colleagues at Abington and across the Libraries in planning, delivery, and evaluation of information literacy instruction, reference services, and research support;
  • Developing and sustaining collaborative relationships with faculty, students, and staff in support of campus teaching, learning, and research;
  • Serving as liaison to campus units which focus on undergraduate student success and retention;
  • Developing print and online research and instructional materials; participating in collection development with responsibility for building and maintaining collections across the curriculum; Participating in the review and development of library policies and procedures; and participating in faculty governance and University service.


This position will be filled as a tenure-line librarian position. In addition to the above duties, tenure-track library faculty are expected to participate in research activities and University and professional service in support of promotion and tenure requirements. Requirements:

  • Requires a MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program or an equivalent graduate degree in a related field;
  • Experience related to information literacy instruction, reference, and research support;
  • Demonstrated commitment to being student-centered;
  • Must demonstrate cultural fluency, awareness of the needs of international students and diverse learner communities, and a demonstrated potential for achievement in library community engagement. Strong commitment to diversity, equity, respect and inclusion;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Some evening and/or weekend work is required.


Compensation and Benefits: Rank and salary are dependent upon qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include liberal vacation, excellent insurance and health care coverage, state or TIAA retirement options, and educational privileges. In addition, faculty in the University Libraries are afforded funds for professional development travel annually. Faculty may be asked to travel as official representatives of the Libraries to certain events and those trips are reimbursed at full cost within limits established by the University.
