Managing Librarian or Library Manager - Austin Public Library

Location: USA - TX - Austin

  • Develops long and short-term plans for library branch.
  • Assists in development of budget and grant applications, which may include directing or monitoring work unit expenditures.
  • Advises library staff on library procedures and issues.
  • Provides outreach services to the public. Directs and develops public relations for library branch activities. Coordinates customer service hotline.
  • Plans, develops, and manages library branch fund-raising activities and administers spending of donations.
  • Oversees maintenance, security, and physical attributes of facility, grounds, and equipment.
  • Conducts meetings, training, and public programs. Interprets and explains policies to public and staff.
  • Coordinates with other libraries and organizations concerning resource sharing and coordination of services.
  • Oversees cash handling and reporting. Prepares reports, collects and monitors statistics.
  • Represents the City of Austin and Austin Public Library to the public.
  • Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised: Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling and recommendation for dismissal
  • Develops long and short-term plans. Stays abreast of library and archives issues and trends.
  • Assists in development of budget and grant applications, may direct or monitor work unit expenditures.
  • Provides input into the development of policies and procedures for library. Coordinates system-wide library activities, such as collection development, acquisitions, cataloging, processing, mending, withdrawals, recycling of books, and circulation support.
  • Advises library staff on library procedures and issues, including selection, collection development, cataloging and classification, processing, intellectual freedom, and/or preservation.
  • Provides outreach services to the public .Directs and develops public relations for work unit activities. Conducts meetings, trainings, and public programs. Interprets and explains policies to public and staff. Represents the City of Austin and Austin Public Library to the public. Coordinates customer service hotline.
  • Selects library materials and develops collections for system, branch, or special collections. Provides original cataloging in all formats. Compiles bibliographies.
  • Plans, develops, and manages work-unit fund raising activities and administer spending of donations.

  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Business Management, Education, English, Literature, Social Work, or another related field, plus four (4) years of relevant experience, two (2) years of which were in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited university, plus four (4) years as a professional librarian, two (2) years of which as a lead or supervisor.
  • Prior experience working as a manager or assistant manager of an urban public library facility.
  • Experience working with customers who may be experiencing homelessness and/or social or mental anxieties.
  • Experience working with children and teens in an urban public library.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations.
  • Ability to travel to more than one work location
