Position Description:

Plans, organizes, directs, and schedules the work of library public service areas (circulation, interlibrary loan, and reserves).

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Library Public Services Manager assumes total operational responsibility for the library public service areas (circulation, interlibrary loan, and reserves) and performs complex technical operations and public services transactions. The Library Public Services Manager is knowledgeable about the operating procedures and policies of libraries and may recommend policy changes to improve service. The Library Public Services Manager may design new procedures to increase efficiency and provides work direction and training to Library Technicians I and II, Library Assistants, and Assistant Instructional Computer Lab Technicians. The Library Public Services Manager interacts regularly with library users.

Examples of Duties

  • Oversees specialized and technical functions related to the management of library services operations, including implementation of policies and procedures related to the integrated library system.
  • Trains and supervises Library Technicians I and II, Assistant Instructional Computer Lab Technicians, Library Assistants, and student assistants in the daily operation of the assigned areas.
  • Plans, assigns, organizes, and monitors work while coordinating multiple service areas.
  • Develops, evaluates, and recommends library procedures and resolves operational and procedural problems in cooperation with the Dean and librarians.
  • Participates in planning and developing library policies, procedures and programs and may initiate them. Contributes to the program review and accreditation processes.
  • Provides information and assistance to faculty, staff, and students on the use of library systems and the location of materials and answers general and directional inquiries.
  • Communicates library policies to users, addresses user comments and complaints, and enforces the Student Code of Conduct. Maintains, and monitors preparation of, financial and statistical records and reports.
  • Develops and coordinates library signage, flyers, reports, publications (print and electronic), library bulletin boards, and displays cooperatively with the Dean and librarians.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:
  • Management methods and skills necessary for supervision.
  • Principles and practices of supervision and training.
  • Customer service principles.
  • Library terminology, standard library practices and techniques, and office recordkeeping and bookkeeping methods.
  • Integrated library systems and interpretation of manuals.
  • The Dewey Decimal Classification System.
  • Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) fields and tags.

Ability to:

  • Supervise, oversee, plan, and organize the operation of library service areas.
  • Plan, develop, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Apply supervisory skills to train and direct others.
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action within established guidelines.
  • Foster a teamwork environment.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Minimum requirements:

  • Any combination equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of progressively responsible library experience.

Additional Information

Salary:

Starting salary is from $5,166.00 to $5,699.00 per month depending upon education and experience. Step placement within the appropriate column is determined by Article VIII of the Collective Bargaining agreement. Fringe benefits, which are subject to change pursuant to negotiations under Section 3500 of the California Government Code, are presently provided and include family and domestic partner medical and dental, two-party vision plan, and employee life insurance.

Selection Process
