Library Manager or Managing Librarian - Austin Public Library

Location: USA - TX - Austin

The person who fills this position with the Austin Public Library will supervise the newly formed Sight & Sound Team. This team will be responsible for creating and marketing core elements of the City of Austin that makes it a popular place to live and work: entertainment, music, and technology. In addition, this new team will be responsible for maintaining a new local music/streaming service that allows customers to listen to music while also supporting local musicians.

And, this team will also be heavily involved in programming highlighting our Sight & Sound collections as well as teaching adults and youth specialized computer software programs that support learning about Artificial Intelligence as well as music and video editing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in an urban library environment.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and experience providing customer service.
  • Experience in leading others and/or supervising the work of others.
  • Experience in managing a high volume of workflow and workload.
  • Experience in working with of diverse backgrounds and people intellectual experiences.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with other City employees and the public.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in developing collections, particularly in the area of music, film/TV and technology
  • Experience in creating and marketing programs that support music, film/TV and technology collections.


MANAGING LIBRARIAN
DUTIES, FUNCTIONS, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Develops long and short-term plans. Stays abreast of library and archives issues and trends.
  • Assists in the development of budget and grant applications may direct or monitor work unit expenditures.
  • Provides input into the development of policies and procedures for the library. Coordinates system-wide library activities,   such as collection development, acquisitions, cataloging, processing, mending, withdrawals, recycling of books, and circulation support.
  • Advises library staff on library procedures and issues, including selection, collection development, cataloging and classification, processing, intellectual freedom, and/or preservation.
  • Provides outreach services to the public. Directs and develops public relations for work unit activities. Conducts meetings, training, and public programs. Interprets and explains policies to the public and staff. Represents the City of Austin and Austin public Library to the public. Coordinates customer service hotline.
  • Selects library materials and develops collections for system, branch, or special collections. Provides original cataloging in all formats. Compiles bibliographies.
  • Plans, develops and manages work-unit fundraising activities and administer spending of donations.
  • Oversees maintenance, security, and physical attractiveness of facility, grounds, and equipment.
  • Coordinates with other libraries and organizations concerning resource sharing and coordination of services.
  • Oversees cash handling and reporting. Prepares reports, collects and monitors statistics.

  • Knowledge of library procedures, systems, and techniques. 
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws. 
  • Knowledge of City practice, policies, and procedures. 
  • Knowledge of fiscal planning and budget preparation. 
  • Knowledge of reference tools and procedures. 
  • Knowledge of current and retrospective literature. 
  • Knowledge of archival issues and trends. 
  • Knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques and principles. 
  • Skill in oral and written communication. 
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing. 
  • Skill in using computers and related software, including Microsoft Office products. 
  • Skill in data analysis and problem-solving. 
  • Skill in planning and organizing. 
  • Skill in collection development. 
  • Ability to plan and present effective programs and/or exhibits. 
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities. 
  • Ability to stay current on archival issues and trends. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with other City employees and the public. 
  • Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited university, plus four (4) years as a professional librarian, two (2) years of which as a lead or supervisor.

  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Business Management, Education, English, Literature, Social Work, or another related field, plus four (4) years of relevant experience, two (2) years of which were in a lead or supervisory capacity.
