Library Assistant II - Getty Library

The Getty Library seeks a Library Assistant II to work with the Special Collections Reading Room team to support public service activities and oversee the Special Collections Reading Room. Reporting to the Special Collections Reading Room Supervisor, the Library Assistant II’s primary duties are to assist in the daily operations of the Special Collections Reading Room which include: retrieving and shelving Special Collections materials; working with colleagues to maintain storage vaults; conducting inventories of Special Collections material; monitoring and maintaining Special Collections Reading Room and Seminar Rooms. Uses online library system Ex Libris’ Alma to create, maintain and update holdings and item records. The Library Assistant II provides services to a wide variety of staff and researchers.
The Library Assistant II also responds to routine queries from staff and researchers; refers more complex queries to the Library Assistant IV, the Special Collections Reading Room Supervisor, reference librarians and curators as appropriate. Participates in special projects as assigned.
Major Job Responsibilities
- Daily paging and reshelving a high volume of material
- Applies advanced knowledge of libraries, online systems and records
- Assists in development and maintenance of databases and operating procedures
- Highly competent to work with library information systems and maintain awareness of current trends and developments in the field
- Assists with and resolves complex problems
- Staffs a reading room and participates in a range of complex library service activities for staff and external library users
- Ensures proper handling, care, storage, preservation, and tracking of collection items. May conduct complex collection maintenance as needed
- Shelves, sorts, pages, routes, scans, or delivers collection materials from different locations in the library or warehouse
- Learns and uses various library software applications to execute complex transactions to track materials, describe collections, manage library collections, and document activities
- Maintains collection storage spaces and vaults by organizing, conducting physical shifts of material within vaults, and other inventory control projects
- May facilitate tours, workshops, and classes
- Participates in special projects as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in art history or related discipline
- 2-3 years experience in library setting
- Reading knowledge in at least one foreign language preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to learn library-specific software applications
- Experience with industry-standard software suites as appropriate to assigned duties
- Experience with bibliographic databases and library-specific software applications preferred
- Requires ability to handle rare and unique materials with care
- Physical activity for extended periods at various times throughout the day including lifting library materials weighing up to 40 pounds and pushing heavy book carts.
- Ability to climb industrial ladders required in order to page and shelve from the collections located on 12-foot high compact shelving units.
