Librarian - Montserrat College of Art

Location: USA - MA - Beverly

The Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA is hiring a Librarian. The College Librarian ensures that the library is a vital partner in and inspiration to the creative and intellectual activity that goes on at Montserrat. The Librarian develops and curates the College’s visual and textual learning resources, including books and serials, image assets and e-resources, and selected institutional archives, ensuring that these match curricular and other requirements, and that they are visible and accessible. The College Librarian partners with student groups, Exhibitions, and Academic Affairs to make the library an active gathering space for the community.

Major Functional Areas and Description of Duties:

  • Responsible for the overall management of the Library, including Image Library and College archives
  • Develops, supervises and provides library services that include circulation, interlibrary loan, reference, information literacy activities, and campus community outreach
  • Selects, supervises, evaluates, and oversees the training and mentoring of student employees
  • Prepares and manages budgets for the Library
  • Collects and maintains library statistics
  • Oversees and participates in the development of reference services and bibliographic instruction. Works with faculty to develop and implement information literacy objectives
  • Oversees and/or provides technical services (ordering books & supplies; cataloguing and entering data into NOBLE systems); implements upgrades and changes in library database software
  • Helps the college develop and organize digital assets (e.g. exhibition images, visiting artist videos, etc.)
  • Provide guidance and assistance to College offices in developing, implementing, and improving recordkeeping systems and practices, including the management and preservation of electronic records
  • Promote and advocate for the Library as a hub for student and faculty activity and success
  • Collaborate with other Montserrat stakeholders to develop and promote information technology applications
  • Collaborate with the directors of other libraries in NOBLE, the regional library consortium, to improve access to information, and to envision and implement new digital initiatives
  • Stays engaged in developments in visual resources librarianship through professional memberships (ARLIS, ALA, VRA, &c.), participation in conferences, and monitoring of professional literature. Serves as the liaison to NOBLE
  • Assist with the accession, appraisal, arrangement, and description of artists’ books, zines, interactive media and rare books
  • Attends Faculty meetings; serves on Gallery/Library Committee, and on other committees and ad hoc task forces as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: (Experience, Skills & Abilities)

  • ALA accredited MLS required, preferably with a BA or BFA in art history or studio art


  • Three years of professional post-MLS library experience
  • Higher Education library experience preferred
  • Fluency with bibliographic, reference and learning resources
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Mac and PCs, Microsoft Word, and Internet search engines
  • Experience with automated library systems, preferably with Evergreen ILS
  • Experience in budget preparation and monitoring; bibliographic instruction; technical services; and collection development

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

  • Able to lift 25lbs on a routine basis

Special Notations or Conditions of Employment:

  • May be required to work evening or weekend hours, depending on library staff scheduling
