The Austin Public Library is looking for a forward-thinking and community-focused Librarian or Library Assistant Manager to lead a customer-service oriented staff. The ideal candidate will work to shape and enhance the libraries’ role as a neighborhood focal point.

We are especially interested in candidates who have experience working in urban environments, who have prior experience managing large workloads, and experience in interacting with a wide and diverse customer base.

LIBRARIAN III
  • Knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques and principles.
  • Knowledge of public library issues and trends.
  • Knowledge of reference tools and procedures.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in using computers and related software, including Microsoft Office products.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Ability to stay current archival issues and trends.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public.
  • Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.

LIBRARY ASSISTANT MANAGER
  • Knowledge of electronic databases, internet resources, bibliographic sources, reference materials, circulation software, and library automation systems. Knowledge of library procedures, systems, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws.
  • Knowledge of city practice, policy, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of fiscal planning and budget preparation.
  • Knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques and methods.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in using computers and related software, including Microsoft Office products.
  • Skill in data analysis and problem-solving.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Ability to plan and present effective programs.
  • Ability to stay abreast of library trends.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public.

  • Ability to stoop, bend, walk, and reach heights of up to six (6) feet.
  • Ability to lift or pull book bags and equipment up to fifty (50) pounds.

DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

LIBRARIAN III
  • Explains policies and procedures to public, staff, and client public libraries. Interprets state and federal library laws and rules to citizen advocacy groups and governing bodies.
  • Investigates and resolves complaints involving staff and public.
  • Contributes to preparation and monitoring of division budget. Prepares grant applications for the division or for client public libraries.
  • Compiles bibliographies, reference guides, newsletter articles, statistics and written reports and other materials for the library patrons.
  • Processes new and incoming books and assesses collections on a regular basis to ensure a proper collection.
  • Serves on division's management team and on library-wide committees and task forces.
  • Engages in long and short-range planning for the work unit or for client public libraries.
  • Provides direct reference service to the public or to the management and staff of public library clients.
  • Researches, appraises, selects and orders materials for assigned section(s) of the library collection or professional library collection of the work unit.
  • Appraises, organizes and processes special archival collections. Provides basic conservation of archival materials.
  • Researches, appraises, selects and orders materials for assigned collection (2) of the library collection or professional library collection of the work unit.
  • Conducts meetings, training sessions and public programs. Manages outreach and promotions for library system for branch.
  • Manages outreach and promotion for library system or branch.
  • Trains and consults with client library staff on collection development public library management, specialized services to library users, and utilization of electronic resources.

LIBRARY ASSISTANT MANAGER
  • Provides customer service by staffing public service desk, checking materials in and out, pulling holds, re-shelving items, assisting with customer technology questions, explaining policies, and creating displays.
  • Creates and implements programs, including outreach engagement, based on community needs and City and department's strategic priorities.
  • Responds to customer inquiries and requests for information in-person, by phone or online, and refers complex inquiries and requests to professional librarians, facilities, and technical staff.
  • Provides administrative support including scheduling and coordinating meeting and room reservations, responding to phone calls, distributing mail, ordering supplies, and completing cash handling, reporting, and reconciling tasks.
  • Investigates and resolves complaints involving staff and public.
  • Serves on library-wide committees and task forces.
  • Engages in long- and short-range planning for the work unit.
  • Develops work schedules and monitors time sheets and payroll for administrative and volunteer staff.
  • Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised: Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling and recommendation for dismissal.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

LIBRARIAN III
  • Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited university plus three (3) years as a professional librarian, one (1) of which was in a lead/supervisory capacity.

LIBRARY ASSISTANT MANAGER
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, plus four (4) years of relevant experience, including two (2) years of which were in a lead or supervisory capacity.
Or
  • Graduation with a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university may substitute for two (2) years of the required work experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations.
  • Experience working in a position with extensive customer contact
  • Experience working as a manager or assistant manager of an urban public library facility.
  • Experience monitoring and directing workflow.
  • Spanish or other foreign language proficiency.
  • Knowledge of collection management and experience performing collection management tasks.
