First Year Experience Librarian - Texas A&M University

Location: USA - TX - College Station

Texas A&M University Libraries seeks a creative and dynamic professional to join the Texas A&M University Libraries as one of two new First Year Experience Librarians. This is an academic appointment carrying responsibility for engaging in librarianship and professional development to meet both the Libraries’ and the University’s requirements for promotion. This is a non-tenure track faculty position with the academic title of Lecturer, engagement in research or service activities is not expected.

Reporting to the Dean of Libraries through the First Year Programs Coordinator, the First Year Experience Librarian is part of a team that focuses on information literacy instruction and outreach to primarily first-year students. This team also works with the rest of the Learning and Outreach unit to provide leadership and direction in support of the Texas A&M University Libraries’ instruction and outreach program. The First Year Experience Librarian will work as a member of a team to provide information literacy activities aimed at early undergraduate students and participate in the unit’s core functions of teaching, learning, outreach, instructional assessment, advocacy, and professional development. This position includes occasional evening and weekend responsibilities.

Responsibilities include:
  • Works collaboratively with the first-year experience team to provide instruction and outreach to early undergraduate students, especially in first-year experience courses;
  • Contributes teaching to a growing library instruction program coordinated through the Learning and Outreach unit;
  • Works strategically with partners in the Libraries and across campus to plan instructional programming that furthers the educational mission of the Libraries and the University;
  • Measures instructional outcomes, promotes integration of library instruction into the curriculum, and assesses programming in support of student success;
  • Enhances library instruction to meet the needs of the evolving educational landscape, including potential services and resources for distance education students;
  • Supports and promotes the Libraries’ and Texas A&M University’s shared vision and values;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • American Library Association (ALA)-accredited Master’s degree (or international equivalent)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of information literacy principles and practices
  • Demonstrated evidence of detail-oriented and organization skills
  • Familiarity with best practices in pedagogy, particularly in library instruction
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively, independently, flexibly, and collaboratively
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and teamwork skills complemented by the ability to take initiative
  • Evidence of presentations to groups
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population

Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated professional development in information literacy
  • Demonstrated evidence of effective engagement strategies for presentations to groups of all sizes
  • Demonstrated experience in library instruction
  • Demonstrated knowledge of issues related to distance education and/or instructional technology

Salary/Benefits/Rank: Faculty rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience; minimum starting salary will be $48,500 Excellent benefits include health plan and paid life insurance; several retirement plans including TIAA; paid holidays and vacation; no state or local income tax. Funding is available for professional travel and development activities.
