Director of Pearson Library - Cal Lutheran University

Location: USA - CA - Thousand Oaks


The California Lutheran University Pearson Library, in Thousand Oaks, CA, is seeking a Library Director. Under the supervision of the Provost, the Director oversees all operational aspects of the Pearson Library. The Director is responsible for planning and managing all facets of the library, personnel management, budget administration, and providing a wide range of library services necessary to support and enrich the academic programs and associated students and faculty. The Director will provide leadership for attention to equity of access and inclusive learning support through information literacy programs and will collaborate with departments to advance educational technology in conjunction with library resources. The Director also serves on the Academic Leadership Team, works closely with a variety of partners throughout the Cal Lutheran community, develops policies and procedures, and is responsible for developing and implementing a compelling mission statement, vision, and strategic plan for the Pearson Library. Moreover, the Director leads the library's development activities and stays up-to-date on best practices for academic and research libraries.

Representative Duties:

  • Provide oversight and support to all areas of the library (acquisitions, periodicals, cataloging, access services, databases, instruction, digital initiatives and library technologies, reference, outreach, and collection development).
  • Supervise library staff to define assignments, monitor assignment completion, and provide direction for scheduling-related activities.
  • Lead library information literacy assessment for WSCUC, internal constituents, and other programs as needed.
  • Inspire, lead and foster professional growth and development for the librarians and staff to ensure continued implementation of effective and equitable library services and best practices
  • Prepare and monitor the library budget
  • Develop strong relationships with academic leadership and departments, along with students, staff, and other stakeholders to advocate for library programs.
  • Manage the use of the Pearson endowment in collaboration with the Provost and the Advancement staff.
  • Formulate and implement policies and procedures.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews of all library staff and partner with staff in encouraging and facilitating professional development.
  • Advise the Provost on matters related to library services and prepare reports to the university administration, Board of Regents, and library agencies as required.
  • Devise and administer an innovative strategic plan and vision for the library in concert with the University’s overarching strategic initiatives.
  • Ensure an inclusive learning and work environment that values individual differences
  • Engage in activities with external constituencies, including donors and regional programs/partners.
  • Participate on a regular basis, even if limited, in the provision of information literacy instruction and point-of-need research help.
  • Monitor and oversee archival and digital historical material.
  • Provide subject and reference support in collaboration with appropriate academic departments.
  • Ensure statistics are gathered and reported, including IPEDS, surveys, self-studies, and analyses of library resources, services and facilities.
  • Keep well informed of new trends in academic libraries and provide direction for incorporating new methods and technologies into services and operation of the library.
  • Develop and monitor safety/compliance processes in concert with university administrators and the Emergency Operations Committee (EOC).
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with relevant library networks and consortia.
  • Promote library resources, services and facilities to the University community.
  • Actively participate in library associations and other library scholarship pursuits.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science, Information Science or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program required.
  • At least ten years of experience in an academic library setting.
  • Minimum of five years progressively responsible leadership in an academic library.
  • Expertise in creating, teaching, and evaluating library instruction; proven ability in providing reference and research services; knowledge of access services.
  • Experience working with ethnically and culturally diverse students, faculty, and staff in a shared governance environment.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD and preferable ten years of administrative experience
