Children's Library Assistant (Temporary) - LAC Group

Location: USA - CA - Los Angeles

LAC Group seeks a Temporary Children's Library Assistant for an academic library client in the West Los Angeles area. The position will be responsible for supporting the technical services operations of the University Elementary School Library, which orders, receives, invoices, and catalogs approximately 1000 monographs, serials, audiocassettes and CD’s. The Children's Library Assistant will provide public service support and collection development, assist with the children’s literature department and help supervise work study General Assistants. This is a temporary full-time position that should last between 3-6 months (though could go longer).

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supports the day-to-day activities of the library following established procedural and policy guidelines.
  • Assisting of technical services operations including bibliographic checking, ordering and receiving materials, creating and updating bibliographic records, payment of invoices, claiming unfilled orders, returns and cancellations of unwanted or incorrectly supplied items, cataloging, processing and repairing materials.
  • Maintains relations with vendors and publishers to obtain reliable, fast, and cost-effective service and monitors vendor effectiveness.
  • Work the circulation desk including handling patron inquiries and complaints with support from the librarian, providing reference and readers’ advisory service and function as a specialist in the field of children’s literature.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s Degree in Library Science or Information Services is required.
  • At least 2 years of previous technical services experience preferably at a public or academic library. A detailed knowledge of children’s literature is desirable (but not required).
  • Knowlege of Voyager acquisitions and cataloging clients.
  • Knowledge of the application of automation and microcomputers to library operations including the use of a national database such as OCLC and downloading or export of bibliographic records as well as MARC (Machine Readable Cataloging) bibliographic format and coding convention and subject cataloging tools, including the Dewey Decimal System and Library of Congress Subject Headings.
  • Knowledge of library operations, including functions involved in acquisitions, cataloging and processing.
