Assistant Dean for Student Success and Diversity

Department Description:

The Helen K. and James S. Copley Library, located on the west end of the campus, currently houses over 350,000 print volumes, 100,000 ejournals, 1,000 print subscriptions, 200 databases, and 425,000 ebooks in many languages.

Detailed Description:

The Assistant Dean for Student Success and Diversity will be deeply engaged in all areas dealing with traditional and non-traditional undergraduate student success, including Associated Student Government, first-year students, transfer students, first-generation college students, and sororities and fraternities. They will have experience working with faculty to grow an open education resources (OER) program. The Assistant Dean will assist library faculty and staff in collaborating on issues related to diversity and student success. The Assistant Dean for Student Success and Diversity will liaise with offices in the library and university that deal with diversity, equity, and inclusion matters and affinity groups, such as the Black Student Resource Center, the Asian Students Association, the Diverse Gender and Sexuality Alliance, the Veterans Center, and student support programs, such as Student Support Services and Summer Bridge, TRIO McNair, and Ole Weekend-New Student Orientation.

The candidate will have strong instruction and workshop skills and experience as a liaison librarian will be helpful. This is a highly collaborative position that requires the Assistant Dean for Student Success and Diversity to work with library colleagues, students, faculty, and administrators. This inaugural position provides the opportunity for a candidate to shape the job and to create new campus partnerships and services along with strengthening existing ones. The Assistant Dean must meet reappointment, tenure, and promotion criteria. Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The job applicant should address the following required and desired qualifications in their cover letter.

• ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS is required

• Minimum three years experience with at least two years in an academic or research library

• Enjoy advocating for and working with students

• Experience in open education resources, outreach, student success, diversity or related areas

• Strong commitment to service excellence in working with students, administrators, faculty, and library colleagues

• Strong information literacy instruction and presentation skills; maintains currency in pedagogical practices/strategies and emerging technologies

• Demonstrate experience promoting and growing the Library’s OER and textbook affordability programs; knowledge of copyright and scholarly communication trends

• Collaborate with partners within academic programs, students services, Admissions, Career Services, and Athletics to support student success

• Ability to develops strategies to infuse diversity through the library’s workforce, services, collections, and spaces

• Ability to work some evenings, to conduct instruction sessions, or to attend meetings and events

• Experience supporting undergraduates from underrepresented communities, such as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC)

• Ability to serve as the Center for Inclusion and Diversity’s liaison librarian

• Approach work from an equity and inclusion perspective in instruction and outreach

• Ability to serve on university committees that focus on students, diversity, and OER and textbook affordability

• Advance the Library’s program by serving on library committees and task forces

• Ability to work collaboratively, independently, and contribute effectively to the senior management team

• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

• Record of active membership in professional associations and scholarship (presentations and publications) to meet reappointment, tenure, and promotion criteria


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• A second advanced degree in a related field

• A developed research agenda

• Experience working with faculty

• Liaison librarian experience

• Awareness of accessibility issues

• Experience multi-tasking and managing projects

• Capable of adapting to change

• Understands accountability and the need to assess programs and progress
