Top Ten Things To Do If You've Been Laid Off

  • CAREER DEVELOPMENT
  • JOB MARKET
0

It's Friday, and that means time for our weekly Top Ten. This week we look at the subject of being unemployed, something many of us have experienced (and unusally without aplomb). It's a tough thing to go through, especially in times of corporate downsizing and economic instability. So without further ado...

1. Get off the couch! Don’t sit around waiting for the next job offer to fall into your lap. Start networking, schmoozing, calling, emailing every possible person you know who might be relevant to your job search. You never know who can help you; you never know who will be an angel.

2. Stay optimistic! Don’t beat yourself up. Certainly don’t watch the clock. Use your time as an opportunity to discover who you are. Re-evaluate your skills and determine what you really want out of life. In the hectic day-to-day world you scarcely have a chance to reflect. Make lists; make sure your direction is the right path.

3. Rework that old rez! Resume writing rules change. Don’t use an old copy when interviewing for a new job. Go to the library or a good bookstore to research resume writing for Library and Information Science and other jobs. Contact LibGig’s Resume Doctor – a 30 minute initial consultation is free-of-charge . If you have a few different career directions you’re considering, craft different resumes playing to the qualifications of your different job openings.

4. Talk about it! Believe us, you’re not alone. Don’t hide the fact that you were laid off and are now looking for work. Your family, friends and colleagues will be supportive, trust us. It’s not embarrassing -- it happens to everyone, even CEOs, bigwigs and sacred cows. You may want to pick and choose who to tell and how much to tell; but don’t be surprised if your contacts recommend leads and suggestions for jobs.

5. Broaden yourself. New Skills Can Be A New Asset. Take a course if you want to broaden your skill set; you may be in the red financially now but learning a new language, a new computer program, or just familiarizing yourself with modern technologies you’ve been meaning to do can be a good fiscal investment. Don’t worry about accepting interim or temporary work at a lower salary. Interim work can broaden your horizons and may build up your skills in new areas.

6. Network! We’re not talking about the movie. Spending 7 hours a day on the computer looking at and applying to jobs from innumerable lists and massive job boards often is a counterproductive way to spend your time. Concentrate on targeted job postings from key websites up your alley. And most important, go to professional meetings for in-person networking as often as possible. Most jobs are obtained through informal introductions and “I know a guy in sales looking for a ….” tips. Seek out informational interviews from the people you meet while networking. Go to mixers, parties and events. Talk to friends of friends and acquaintances of colleagues. No one’s off-limits.

7. Read the papers! Don’t stop reading about the current job market. Learn all you can. Know about what’s going on in the world. Sign up for an RSS feed from LibGig. Look on Google for websites that can help you stay abreast of the current job market. The Wall Street Journal Career site is excellent. The more you know, the greater your creative agility will become with regards to seeking out jobs, finding interesting companies and gaining confidence in an interview or networking situation.

8. Stay Focused. Dust yourself off and learn from the experience. Don’t look back; keep moving forward. Don’t heap blame on yourself or those around you, it’s counterproductive and will bring down your energy levels, your confidence and your interpersonal relationships, which you need to rely on as you search for a job.

9. Seek legal opinions. Don’t hesitate to call a recommended job attorney for a second opinion about your job rights and compensation package. Ask friends, relatives, colleagues for recommendations. Although initially expensive, the attorney may get you a better exit deal than the one originally proposed to you. Believe us, this may sound far-fetched, but more often than you’d think, there lies fishy reasons behind sudden departures.

10. Don’t give up. You will need good staying power to continue your job search and you will have learned a lot along the way. Finding a job in many ways is like running a marathon. You want to show up prepared and you need to pace yourself in order to finish. The key is to keep moving even through the aches and pains, in what seems like an endless process. The finish line is always ahead. And if you’re mentally and physically in the zone, you will be able to cross the line with a new job and a renewed sense of self.
