Top Ten Job Search Tips for a Tough Market

We're back with LibGig's weekly Top Ten; this week we tackle the difficult subject of finding a job in a less-than-amiable market.
1. Make sure your resume is up to date, free of mistakes and grammatical errors and includes all of your experience relevant to the position you are applying for: The resume is your sales tool, your calling card, and in general the resume is what gets you the job interview. It seems like common sense, but a resume full of errors and mistakes comes across as careless and unmotivated. Review and revise your resume thoroughly and have friends or colleagues proofread it and give their opinions as well. Also, closely review the job description for which you are applying and if you have any experience listed in the qualifications and requirements for the position, make sure that information is listed and highlighted on your resume. In a tough market it is wise to revise your resume for each individual job you apply for to specifically highlight your skills and experience for that particular job.
2. If you are out of work, devote at least eight hours a day to your job search: In might sound cliché, but finding a good position is like a full-time job, so get out of bed in the morning and treat finding a job like a full time position! Between searching for jobs, revising your cover letter and resume, and interviews, finding a job can take quite a bit of time and dedicating enough time to the search is important. The job search is about selling yourself and if you don’t work hard to push yourself and put yourself out there, you will not get the desired result.
3. Consider Moving: This might sound extreme, but even in a tough market, great job opportunities are out there, just maybe not where you currently reside. Take a look at other cities or places you would be willing to live to see what is out there and available. A move doesn’t have to be permanent, so expand your horizons and make a move!
4. Network: Get out and meet as many people as you possibly can in your industry. Join user groups, attend networking events and seminars, put yourself out there and let your friends and colleagues know you are looking and see if their organization is hiring. If you are searching for a new career, think of the type of position you would ideally like, and try to talk to those people who currently work in those roles. They can give you advice on how they got to where they are.
5. Be open to less traditional or different job titles: Just because you have been working as a research analyst for the past 10 years, doesn’t mean that your next job will be working as a “research analyst”. Today the same position can be titled in numerous ways, so don’t just focus on one job title as a “marketing information specialist” could be right in line with your experience as a research analyst. Look into positions you are interested in and see what job titles they hold; you might be surprised with some position titles you would be quailed for.
6. Do not limit your job search nor expand it too far: People often fear that they are either under qualified or too over quailed for a position for which they apply and this usually has to do with limiting or expanding your job search. Don't limit your search by only applying to positions that meet your exact criteria, but instead get creative and have an open mind when reviewing job descriptions. Conversely, expanding your job search might sound like a contradiction, but why waste your time applying for jobs that you aren’t qualified for? Be honest with yourself about what you are qualified to do. Employers use the resume and cover letter to see where you have been and where you are going and if that bridge is complete, the employer will see why you are applying for the job, even if it is something not completely in line with your past experiences.
7. Be patient, but follow up: Employers can receive hundreds of resumes a day for a specific position so you must have some patience when applying for a job. However, following up on your application for a specific position is not a bad idea. Employers not only want someone with the right experience that can come in and hit the ground running, but they also want someone who is passionate about the position and the organization. Following up will not only show the organization that you are interested in them and their specific position, but it will also be another chance to put your name in front of the decision maker.
8. Prepare for the interview: Research the company and position, dress to impress, and show up on time (or better yet, 10 minutes early) are just a few tips to prepare for the interview. Keep the interview about the job and your past professional experience related to the position. DO NOT get personal in the interview, insult your former employer(s) or show your desperation in attaining a job. Even though your family considers you the “World’s Greatest Dad”, your past employer was a Looney Toon and this is your 3rd interview today and you would take any job offer, do not make the interview about you and bringing these types of issues into the interview reflect on you negatively. Do show some personality and enthusiasm for the position as the employer wants to know that you are excited about the possibility of working for them and in their position. Prepare well, relax and keep the conversation relevant and professional.
9. Be willing to settle: All tough markets are temporary, and most everyone needs some source of income to survive, so if you are in a situation where you absolutely need income, then you should look into taking a job below your current level. The only concern with doing this is you will have to explain this decision twice; once to the employer who is wondering why someone overqualified wants this job and then to your next employer, who will wonder what type of level employee you currently are at. However, this is not a bad thing, but you need to be prepared to answer those questions fully and confidently. Most people have gone through tough times in their life, even hiring managers, so as long as you are honest, open and confident in answering these types of questions, there should be no problem with taking a job below your current level in a tough market. It is better to have a so-so job now so the paychecks keep coming in and you’re still gaining experience as opposed to holding out for your dream job or the next great opportunity. The job market will turn around, so keep focused and do what you can in the mean time.
10. Stay Positive: Remember, even in a recession, some people are still doing well and so can you! Do not fall into a defeatist attitude as that doesn’t do anyone any good. Keep focused and stay positive, things will eventually work out.
