Top Ten Things To Do To Guarantee You WON'T Get the Job

  • CAREER DEVELOPMENT
5
Average: 5 (1 vote)

1. Lie.

Lying on your resume about experience you claim to have had, a degree you supposedly finished, or telling someone you were “laid off” rather than terminated from a previous job. Lying in an interview can be detected, with some good question-asking on the part of the interviewer, who may know more than the liar would think — even if the interviewer is not a professional librarian or information worker. Lying is bad news all the way around.

2. Be disrespectful.

Speaking poorly of your former employer or former colleagues won’t win you any “Brownie points.” Your employer-to-be will think you are an angry ex-employee and someone prone to gossip mongering. Good interpersonal skills are essential in today’s competitive market.

3. Exaggerate.

When asked a straightforward question about your past experience doing a certain type of work or with a certain tool, don’t exaggerate the truth. It is usually obvious to the interviewer that you haven’t really done something of a similar size and scope but — even if you’re lucky enough to fool your interviewer, beware of the-proof-is-in-the-pudding principle when you’re on the job. Do you really want to be terminated for poor performance because you overpromised on your experience and abilities? Think before you speak, and admit if you haven’t done something or have done something similar but on a smaller or different scale — and from there prove how you could handle a larger responsibility.

4. Be defensive.

Nothing warms an interviewer’s heart more than the defensive interviewee who gives short snips for answers and is evasive and suspicious when asked routine questions. You’re on an interview: be prepared for people to want to understand what motivates you, why you made the job changes that you did, what your work style and management style may be, what programs you’ve worked with, and all sorts of other relevant information. Answer openly, honestly, and trust that they know what’s important for this role for which you’re interviewing. Even a whiff of defensiveness can be an opportunity-killer.

5. Wear inappropriate clothing or have poor hygiene.

The interview nightmares, however rare, do occur. Offensive body odor. Big stains on clothing. Excessive perfume (or any detectable perfume, for some interviewers). The, ahem, somewhat revealing attire. All big no-no’s. Take yourself and your abilities seriously and focus your interview’s attention on your skills and abilities and experience and aptitudes, not your physical person.

6. Have lousy communication skills.

There are as many interviewing styles as there are interviewers, but they tend to have some elements in common. Interviewers ask questions or tell you to tell about yourself and your experience. When asked a question — as basic as it sounds, this is often forgotten in the nervousness of the moment — respond to the question. Don’t go on and on about all these other aspects and why you can’t answer the question, or why it would be impossible to answer the question. Get in, answer the question, get out. If the interviewer has follow-up questions, then she or he will ask them. It’s okay to take a brief moment to think before you respond, so that you can sift out what information is really essential to answer the questions and what’s a bit superfluous. But do remember to actually answer the question.

7. Arrive late.

Traffic is never an excuse. Enough said.

8. Forget common courtesies.

Be sure to introduce yourself formally to your interviewer. Thank her for her time. Write a thank-you note or at least a thank-you email. Ask appropriate, position-related questions, not where she shops or what school he graduated from or other irrelevant information. Smile during your interview at least a few times — show yourself to be someone who is warm and easy to get along with. We all want friendly coworkers. Shake your interviewer’s hand confidently. Ask if there’s any other information you can supply them with. Be courteous to “the help” who may seat you in the conference room or reception area before you wait. If you interview with a panel, be sure to look at all of them and to thank each of them.

9. Be ill-prepared for the interview.

If you show up without a good understanding of the organization’s primary business or objective, your ship is pretty well sunk before you’ve left port. Know the organization as well as you can, ditto the position for which you’re interviewing. Come prepared and you can relax a little bit more, and let more of your smile show.

10. Discuss politics, religion, sex, or offer personal information.

It’s surprising, but many professionals offer up personal information during their interview — often knowing that the interviewer shouldn’t know or doesn’t want to know these personal details. Please do yourself a favor and don’t do this. If there’s something pressing or urgent that would affect your ability to work in this position — let’s say you’re a single parent with a child to pick up or you have a religious affiliation whereby the holidays might affect your schedule — find a more appropriate, non-issue-specific way of framing it. In other words, euphemize. “I have a standing commitment on this day” or “Does the position allow for some flexibility in the actual time of day the work must be done” or something else to that effect. Finally, do not share your ideas about politicians or hot topics of the day. You could be alienating your interviewer who otherwise may think your skills and experience are a good match. Play it safe, and find someone whose professional opinion you respect help you find more appropriate ways of wording anything that may be a bit on the TMI (too much information) side.

Submitted by aman on Tue, 01/31/2012 - 05:20.

The most important thing is to be honest; if you do not have the answer to a question then say that you do not know the answer; do not waste your and their time. Before you apply for the job make sure you meet the criteria. Such as for a management level job in healthcare, you have to get an online healthcare mba degree.

Sometimes during a job

Submitted by aman on Mon, 01/30/2012 - 06:42.

Sometimes during a job interview you might have to give opinion on any controversial topic; be as much unbiased as you could. Sometimes it helps to prepare at home for such interviews; try to remember your employers are going to scan your potential as an employee, so you have to be well prepared. I was looking for information on organizational leadership when I saw your post.

Submitted by aman on Mon, 01/30/2012 - 06:20.

I have heard that some times people lie to get a job; if you do not have the skill then there is no point in lying about it. You would not be able to handle a job responsibility without proper training. For instance if you have the aim to be a lawyer in criminal justice, you have to have an online master degree in criminal justice.

Submitted by aman on Mon, 01/30/2012 - 06:04.

For certain jobs, you need to be prepared for job specific questions. Such as for teaching jobs, you would be facing questions on your subject; so you need to take special preparation for that. But as a teacher you need to have special training too; consider doing a educational technology degree online.

I think you have pointed out

Submitted by aman on Sat, 01/21/2012 - 01:59.

I think you have pointed out the key areas. If you are punctual, show good communication skill, your interviewers will like you better. Sometimes people make a mistake in their career; they complete one degree course and after getting a job, never think of studying further. But if you can obtain a higher degree while doing your job, your position will better. My friend just completed her dpt programs.

Submitted by aman on Thu, 01/19/2012 - 05:27.

You need to be fully prepared for your interview; you must be thoroughly familiar with your subject. If you are under prepared, you are the one who is going to suffer. You need to have a proper understanding of the requirements of your field; if you are into health care then, doing MBA can better your career prospects. So go for an online healthcare mba.

Submitted by aman on Wed, 01/11/2012 - 04:57.

Your communication skill plays a pivotal role in your job interview; how well you are able to put across your thoughts, your knowledge would give your prospective employers a clear idea of you. So basically you need to work on your communication skill. Also try to obtain higher degrees as it would help you achieve a better career; complete your masters online; I did my masters in nursing online.

Being disrespectful to the interviewer is extremely bad you should not try to be outsmart them or appear to be overconfident. Being polite is the key to your success. Your educational background too matters a lot. For high profile jobs they often require you to have a doctorate degree. You could do doctorate education online now.

Those looking for jobs should be aware of these things. It is always wrong to lie about your qualification and work experience. If you are looking for some high profile jobs then you better consider getting higher education. If you are already doing a job then go for online education degrees like master of science in management.
