Q&A: Stephen Foley of iCyte

iCyte (http://icyte.com/home/login), a brand-new Online Research Management tool, allows users to annotate relevant portions of online interfaces, from PDFs to HTML documents. Users can extract the information that’s pertinent to their research and the annotations can be recalled and filtered at their convenience. Both text and images can be marked by simply selecting the relevant portions of a document.

Stephen Foley is one of the brains behind this site; an Australian who has worked in software development for over 25 years, Foley was the head of the Livenote development team for 6 years prior to their sale to Thomson. Funded privately, iCyte released its pilot program in June, went into its beta phase in September, and plans to roll out its first version of the IE-compatible product by December. Foley says iCyte will be compatible with Firefox by May 2009 and ready to release “to the world” in both browsers later that summer.

Foley calls iCyte the culmination of his work. Since developing the transcript management software Retrieve in the mid-80s, he has been thinking about creating a tool that would eliminate the need for bookmarking, copying, cutting and pasting in web-based research. Together with Graham Smith, founder of Livenote and CEO of iCyte, the duo aim to rewrite the history books in the area of information recall and classification.

“iCyte came about after watching inadequacies in the unwieldy system of pasting and bookmarking,” says Foley. Researchers – serious researchers – deserve a better alternative and the principle of annotating currently existing web pages and online documents seemed to be the logical next step in digital research.

Annotation allows the user to recall the most important parts of a document, and further, summarize what was important. Users can view the results at a later date and order the annotations in a way as to create a digest or enter their own notes about an annotation and categorize it to allow for subsequent filtering. “Anybody who does research for a living will find iCyte useful,” says Foley.

The key advantage of the product is that it does not require any infrastructure changes – it essentially collates data from databases, intranets and extranets, such as Lexis Nexis and Westlaw, and creates one simple interface.

LibGig talked with Stephen Foley and he further explained some facets of this new product.

LG: Anybody who uses research for a living will be interested in this product, but which professions in particular will reap the greatest rewards?

SF: We see iCyte's application as being broad; any industry where users are researching on the internet should be able to benefit from having more structure around their information. Our focus in the short term is the legal and university markets, as that is where we have experience from our work with LiveNote. However we envision this to take off in the financial and media arenas as well.

LG: So once you go “alpha,” anyone can register and use for free?

SF: That’s right. The public version will be free of charge – and that means any user will be able to view your research and annotations. However we will also offer a private version, closed from the public’s eye, for a license fee. This is for people or corporations that don’t want to share their intellectual property, or just want to keep their work private.

LG: Is there any precedent or competition?

SF: Not really. Google Notebook is the closest thing, but there really is no way of returning to the original content with their product. We are focused on being a professional tool that doesn't simply clip and collect.

LG: How has the model changed from pilot to beta?

SF: There were 40 users in our pilot phase, and the changes incorporated were many – we implemented a search feature, we created a print mode on reports, we changed our design. Now that we are in beta, we have an invitation-only advisory group, serious researchers who we’ve developed relationships with at trade shows and the like, and they are demonstrating our product so we can fine-tune up until worldwide release.

LG: What are the legal implications of annotating web sites? Are there any dangers to watch out for, such as the potential for a user to breach IP?

SF: While the onus is on the user to know whether they are breaching copyright, we recognize that the iCyte product makes these copy and saving functions very simple and so we have decided to be more proactive in our stance on copyright issues. We are in the process of forming relationships with online information providers, and are in a position where we can provide a method of authenticating users with them to ensure that their data cannot be accessed by non registered users. This position will allow iCyte users to annotate subscription based sites without having to be concerned about any underlying copyright or IP matters.

LG: So where would you like iCyte to be, one year from now?

SF: I’d like to see the free version running and people from all industries, legal, financial, media, medical, government and others, to be using it. I’d like to build our site’s content up. And I’d like to implement an iCyte search that can identify and capture that small portion of the internet that is useful and relevant.
