From Blu Ray to blog
Let's get the formalities out of the way. My name is Emily and I am 24. I live in New Brunswick, NJ and attend the School of Communication, Information, and Library Studies at Rutgers. I am in my second semester of MLS work, attending part time while working full time. I did my undergraduate at Rutgers as well, with a major in Women's and Gender Studies and a certificate in leadership. I wrote a senior thesis on the ways that men within marginalized groups enact their masculinity in an amplified way in order to compensate for their outsider status. Some of my hobbies include running, exploring web 2.0 technologies, celebrity gossip, and being too busy for much else.
LibGig found me on Twitter, and by sheer virtue of my wit and tendencies for over sharing, awarded me a Blu-ray player for basically being so cool. I have not had time to do much with this impressive piece of technology between work and school, but spring break is about a month away so I should have it cracked open by then.
After being condescended to and screamed at by general contractors at my day job, I turn to my true love: library science. I was drawn to the profession for a few reasons, first and foremost being my love of the science of information. I am so impressed with the volume of recorded information that has been tirelessly organized, cataloged, and made ready for use. The boundless opportunities for learning, research, and personal growth afforded by the library are too often overlooked. In particular, I am interested in government publications and resources. I feel that these tools, when combined with information literacy and technologies along with competent reference, can breed a new golden age in American civic participation. All too often, we do not utilize what has been provided as our right as Americans and just prefer to Google it.
I hope to make this blog a chronicle of my experience as a library student and a lifelong learner. I appreciate this opportunity to create a dialogue in the library community and to spread the knowledge and experience that I have gained, and look forward to making some intelligent comments about what I see happening in library science.
