Librarians Are Like Monkeys

  • WORKPLACE ISSUES

I was just telling a friend that I had the strangest experience yesterday with a patron. They came up to me with a question, and then after I helped them they said, "How does it feel to know that you probably won't have a job in 10 years?" and I said "What do you mean?" and they replied, "You know! Because the Internet is going to replace libraries?" I told him that I didn't really think that would ever happen and when he said, that soon all the information in books would be online and we won't need the physical books anymore, I said, "Well, I don't really believe that books are going anywhere anytime soon since no one wants to curl up with a laptop to read themselves to sleep." Also, librarians, we adapt! We've been around a long time, been through a lot of stuff and we're still going through stuff now! We are an amazing example of adaptation and Darwinian theory! We don't break, we bend! We don't die off, we change how we work!

Of course when you adapt you sometimes need to create "retronyms"! I just found this great article about creating one for pre-internet librarians...

http://www.huliq.com/1/71805/retronym-contest-what-do-you-call-non-inter...

Personally, I like number 6, the "3x5 librarian" because it really does take me back to when I was a kid and the library still had card catalogs! Which reminds me about my original point...adaptation. My favorite story is that I worked at my school library the summer between sophomore and junior year of high school (A great summer! I was learning to drive and had my first job!) But anyways...one of my jobs that summer was to input as many entries from the card catalog into the new "computerized catalog" as I could! I look back at the conversations and debates we had about how this new-fangled system would change how the students used the library and I'm just so amazed!

So, don't forget, when people ask you about the future of the library and try to make you think that the library won't survive, just remind them, we've been here since Alexandria, and we'll be here long after the Internet has evolved into whatever it is going to change into!

Darwiningly Yours,
the bookish bluestocking

p.s. Apologies for my lack of postings...New job, new coworkers, new patrons, new politics! PHEW! I'm finally starting to settle into my schedule.

What a funny title,but when

Submitted by maddy28j on Mon, 01/18/2010 - 17:50.

What a funny title, but when I went through this article what I found is that, one way or another everything leads toward the future. It doesn’t take a librarian to show someone how to use the Internet. What matters is service—whoever provides it. As usual the discussion is all about exploitation. It costs a lot less to exploit a clerk than it does to exploit a librarian.

Employers who have managed

Submitted by markweee on Thu, 12/10/2009 - 01:35.

Employers who have managed to retain a solid core staff are now looking for ways to stimulate enthusiasm in their employees and help to increase teamwork and camaraderie. There are many team-building workshops to choose from and now there's a new one that's beginning to gain interest — "team-building cooking events." Usually held at a boss' home, co-workers are tasked to create a dish from scratch and are each assigned different responsibilities.bachelors degree accounting AND online masters degree accounting AND doctorate accounting
