Combining a Desk Job with a Healthy Lifestyle
It doesn't matter where you work, whether its in the office of the company you work for, or if its a home office where you work for yourself, you are going to spend a large part of the day sitting still. Okay, you may be sitting in a state of hyperactivity in that seat answering phones, writing up reports on your computer keyboard, fending off requests to take on more work from colleagues or just burning nervous energy sitting there tapping your pen against the desk. But the fact remains that the larger muscles of your body, most notably your legs and torso, are not doing much of anything for all of that time. As it is these muscles more than any other that you need to keep active if you want to maintain a healthy weight (larger muscles burn more energy thereby using more calories), you need to get them working whenever you possibly can.
If the option of getting up from your desk and walking around the office, building or even around the block is available to you, then take it as often as you can. If you can get up and walk around the office every hour just to shake out the cobwebs, its better than nothing. Better still is if you can get up and take a run up and down some stairs inside the building you work in because that will force those large leg muscles into doing some work. The more flights of stairs you can run up and down, the better!
If you can get out of the building and walk around, weather permitting and of course if it is safe to do so, then that is even better because you need some fresh air in your lungs not only to boost the body's metabolic processes, but combined with some natural daylight, to make you feel better. If you get a lunch hour in which you can do this and spend it either walking around, or if there is a public pool nearby, why not go for a swim for half an hour? This will really boost your energy levels, tone up your muscles and help you maintain a healthy weight despite leading a sedentary working lifestyle while you are at work.
Lastly, once you are away from the office at the end of the day, the very worst thing you can do is to get home and head straight for the sofa, in order to spend the evening in front of the TV. It is far better to meet up with some friends for a team game of volleyball, soccer, tennis doubles or any kind of sport that will give you some additional exercise. This is an excellent way to keep yourself in shape and avoid the need to get involved with any weight loss programs, because by combining a desk job with a healthy lifestyle, you will be fit and healthy enough not to even need them!
