In uncertain times many people are turning to freelancing in order to increase their salary or get by in times of unemployment. In the time I have spent freelancing I have already learned a lot about how to protect myself. Here are ten tips to being a successful freelancer:

1) Constantly hone your craft in between projects. If you are a writer or designer work on personal projects that interest you to keep sharp and to build your portfolio.
2) Keep learning. Stay connected to your professional community by continuing your education through seminars, classes and social media.
3) Use your intuition. If a potential employer seems fishy don't work with them.
4) Try to secure a deposit and milestone payments so you know your employers are for real.
5) Don't share personal information like your social security number with your employers.
6) Always sign a contract so you are protected legally in case something goes wrong.
7) Set realistic deadlines and try to stick to them as best you can.
8) Expect to be working on more than one project at a time. Successful freelancers have more than one source of income at any given time.
9) Make sure your website is up-to-date and reflects your skills. It is the first thing a potential employer will see about you.
10) Try to pick projects that you are personally interested in. Your work will be better overall.
