Twitter: Now Coming to Burning Man.
The first time I arrived at Burning Man (http://www.burningman.com/) in 2002 I was nineteen years old, exhausted from the ten hour drive and desperate to call my mother to tell her I wasn't dead. At the urging of a friend back home I had hastily bought a ticket and procured a ride with another girl all the way from Los Angeles to Nevada.
After stumbling out of the car, my brain popped with three energy drinks and my freckled skin was already burning from the relentless sun. I wandered up a rough-looking guy in leather chaps and asked him if I could borrow his phone. He laughed at me and offered me a cold beer instead (he didn't know I was underage). And so I had my first experience of Burning Man. I realized that I had been neatly removed from the outside world for the next week. What an amazing feeling.
Let me explain.
For those of you who not familiar with Burning Man, the best way to describe it is to call it is a temporary city, constructed over about a the course of a week in the Black Rock Desert. The festival has a surreal, post-apocalyptic feel to it, complete with white-out sand storms, roving pirate ship art cars and geodesic glowing domes that pump electronica out at all hours of the day. You cannot buy or sell anything except ice from the cafe in the center of the city and you must pack in enough water, shelter and food to last you five to eight days in extreme temperatures that regularly exceed a hundred and five degrees. On Saturday night a fifty-foot effigy of a man is burned in a bonfire surrounded by hundreds of drummers, revelers and fire dancers. Kind of hard to picture? Just check out some of the pictures on the website.
One of the distinctive characteristics of Burning Man is that in prior years there was little to no contact with the outside world over the course of the week. The festival is so removed from the outside world that participants typically discover that all kinds of barriers they didn't know existed come tumbling down. Without the distraction of the outside world, important discoveries are made on an deep, internal level. Not this year however. Now, Twitter and cell service will be widely available.
This year marked the first year that you could actually make and receive cell phone calls at Burning Man thanks to the work of the Open BTS Project. The Open BTS Project is “an effort to construct an open-source Unix application that uses the Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) to present a GSM air interface (”Um”) to standard GSM handset and uses the Asterisk software PBX to connect calls”. In other words, open source software to run your own cell network. While the project is certainly interesting on a geeky level, it does change a lot about Burning Man and makes it a lot of accessible to people on the outside.
Not only does having cell coverage enable people to use their phones to check in with the kids and their office, but it also enables people to tweet about their wild adventures. Instead of turning to the woman next to you and sharing your reaction you can instead tell your followers what is going on. Twitter can be a great way to keep your friends abreast of your amusing foibles but there must be a limit. If you are at Burning Man in the midst of a wild encounter with a group of pirates, please just enjoy the experience instead of pulling out your iPhone. While it might make sense to do so in the middle of a conference, it does not make sense to do so while you observe the a choreographed performance of flame throwers in the middle of the desert.
Digital technology simultaneously allows people to share their experiences as well as separate them from the full rawness of the moment. Twitter has become a way for people to relay the events of the day to others without real physical interaction. Burning Man is just not the place for this kind of mediated participation. So much of modern life is based on the manipulation of technology for communication. Where does it end?
One of the reasons I stopped Burning Man is because the event stopped feeling like a separate entity from my daily life. I made enough friends who went to Burning Man each year that I wasn't meeting enough new ones out in the desert. Since 2002, the number of people attending the event grew from 30,000 to 50,000. I'm not discouraging others from experiencing the lovely chaos of the festival for themselves, I just stopped getting the isolation I craved by attending. I'm not sure that I would be able to stomach the sight of people walking around in their freaky best updating their Twitter streams. I'm afraid it would take the event past the point of recognition for me.
It is hard enough to describe Burning Man in sufficient detail on paper, a tweet or a call cannot and will not do justice for people keen on getting a glimpse into the experience.
