Losing Our Edge in Social Media
According to the Guardian younger social networking users are being chased away by their 25-to-34-year-old counterparts who are making social networks as uncool as jam band music or Garrison Keiller. While I personally consider my tech savvy professional peers to be cool we are not necessarily embraced by high schoolers as the epitome of hip culture. Personally, I was never considered hip even as a teenager except in an offbeat, is-she-serious kind of way.
I don't know who the latest bands are or what is in style this season — especially since I quit my job at a design school. Most people I come in contact with these days are out of college and high school. When I turn on the radio I am only reminded of how much I miss the music of 1996. More and more my Facebook friends are posting pictures of their babies or updating their networks about their latest progress on their second master's degree rather than sending out hostile messages of damnation to the "man." We are young teachers now, entrepreneurs and entry to mid-level project managers for giant media companies. Where is the irony in such titles?
While I still act like a teenager in too many ways I think I am losing my edge and apparently the cool kids on Twitter and Facebook are sensing this too.
