The Drawbacks of Attending Community College

According to new study in USA Today students who transfer from a community college earn less than people who began their college career at the a four-year college. As a student and LIT (librarian in training) interested in the general perception of education this study strengthens some of the personal observations I have made over the years. While I do not agree that the decision to attend community college indicates more than the decision to save some money and a desire to take some additional time to consider one’s options, I can understand how the decision might appear on paper to potential employers. Despite the trend of most Gen X and Y workers to change companies multiple times, hiring managers want new hires to display a willingness to commit. Human nature dictates that uncertainty equates discomfort.

A hiring manager wants obvious signs that their new hire is competent. The easiest way to determine this fact is through their associations with big name popular schools. Factors of one’s ability (or willingness to live in debt) by attending Harvard do not usually even register to potential employers. While my undergraduate experience at the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies did cost a great deal of money, I qualified for a lot of financial aid and earned many scholarships for music and good grades to help me pay.

On the other hand I chose not to attend the local community college because I did not feel that it would be as challenging as the school I decided to attend. I also noticed that my friends who decided on two years of community college had some trouble mustering up the impetus to obtain their bachelor’s degree. One girl, whom I have known for over ten years, one of the most intelligent individuals I have ever met, is now struggling with her plan of action to attend a four-year state school well into her mid-twenties. At this point she has no debt but is also limited to the kind of jobs she can obtain. At this point it will be more difficult to get back into the lifestyle and mind set of a full time undergraduate student. Especially since most of them are under the legal drinking age.

However, I still plan on attending community college classes after my impending graduation from SJSU for my continuing computer science education. I am not willing to take on any more debt in regards to my education and so the local community college will have to suffice for additional web usability, database programming and web design classes. I hope future employers will not judge me too harshly.

I think it would be a better decision to take up an online course. If you need financial aid program that too is available online; my friend is into nursing; she decided to go for further training, but she did not want to leave her job, so she went for rn-bsn online programs.

If you are not satisfied with your community college program, then you should not continue that. Instead join an online education program. Usually online programs are much more convenient, and not so time consuming. From my experience I could say that you would benefit a lot; I recently finished doing my online industrial organizational psychology graduate programs.

Now most students prefer e-learning. This has many benefits; you could learn in advance about the course, as well as the institute. It is way better to attend courses, that are valued in the job market. So doing business administration degree online could help you build a good marketing career.

Doing a full time course is so tough; most students do not want to waste their time in a full time course. Not all students qualify for scholarships; so they have to do jobs to meet the costs of education. If you do not have proper qualification then you still would not get good jobs; for getting jobs you must have an impressive resume; students now show preference for mostly career oriented courses like master of public administration. You can get your degree from a good institute, most institutes offer online courses to students.

If a student is dissatisfied with the institute then that could affect his studies. It often happens you have preference for any institute, but could not enroll for a course due to long duration of the course or for some other reason. Check if that institute offers online course like executive leadership development program; if the online course suits your needs then take admission.

If you are feeling that your requirements are not fulfilled in the community college, then go for some other institute. Consider the field that you are planning to work in, if you can find an institute, that offers that course, then go for it. Look for institutes that offer different online courses, such as online MBA, degree, law degree, homeland security masters degree etc.

Now education is more flexible; it is also brimming with opportunities. One should take advantage of these chances.
