The Working Graduate Student

To be a working graduate student is an exercise in temporary futility. My job has NOTHING to do with libraries or information science. I go through each day feeling irrelevant; trapped and stifled by the mundane office tasks that constitute my position. "Sales Coordinator," a coordinator of sales. I think that really says it all. In this economy I am lucky to still have a job with good benefits and nice coworkers. Lucky is not the same as happy, unfortunately.

At the moment, I work full time and take two courses at night. With 40 hours of working, 5-6 hours of commuting, 20 hours of homework, and 6 hours of exercise every single week, I do not have much time left over. Unfortunately, I have adult bills that require an adult job that eats up all of my time. This lack of time makes me obsess over the details of my daily activities and should probably make me want to be as productive as possible. Unfortunately I feel the opposite has become true. I am so much less productive than I know I can be because I'm so burned out on trying to be productive. It’s a vicious cycle. I know what you're thinking: people do this all the time so man up, you baby. To me, it is not worth feeling this unsatisfied by my occupation no matter how temporary it is. I yearn to be a full time graduate student and I think it might be worth sixty hours of homework every week for a year just to get on with my life.

To that end, I have applied for two very prestigious fellowships and more federal loans than I ever thought possible to undertake. As early as June I could be out of the manufacturing business and into something I really love doing. One fellowship is in archives at a university with incredible collections to process. The other is at Rutgers, but is actually through the Political Science department. Both would give me the experience in archives and politics that are going to be so essential for me when I graduate. I also feel like this could be my last chance to relive college but actually do it right this time. Oh, life was so wonderful before responsibility! Getting up at noon and procrastinating until 4, saving every assignment until the day before it was due, skipping class at the drop of a hat, normal undergraduate stuff. Although I was technically paying for it then (through student loans), I feel like I'm REALLY paying for school this time around and promise myself that I will be good. No more Thirsty Thursday, road trips to nowhere, skipping the readings, or even sleeping past 7. If I treat it like a job, it will turn into one and that's what this is all about.

As a working graduate student you will keep looking for better working opportunities. For an unmarried working student if you are offered a better job in a near by city you will most probably take it. People need to move from place to place if there is a good job opportunity on offer.

If you happen to be moving to India then packing and shifting is huge headache that you can leave to a reliable shipping company.

If you can get admission into a college that offer residential hostel facilities that is great if not you have to find one yourself.

Finding a part time job is another aspect of studying in college, your are looking at ways to have extra pocket money and working part time a restaurant or a electronics store a good way earning some extra money.
